Halloween Safety Tips

Goldstein Heslop Steele Clapper Oswalt & Smith Dec. 10, 2021

Halloween is just around the corner, so it’s important to prepare for any potential hazards both for yourself and those around you. Here are a few quick, valuable tips for Halloween holiday safety.

Safety for Your Kids

Your kids are probably looking forward to trick-or-treating, but you should take a few extra precautions to prevent them from getting injured. Whether you are planning on trick-or-treating with them or they are venturing on their own, be sure to reinforce where your children are and are not allowed to go. Be sure to keep to well-lit areas, and stay within neighborhoods away from main roads.

Once your kids return home, be sure to check over their candy haul and immediately dispose of anything that looks as though it may be dangerous or have been tampered with. Your kids may not like this, but candy that has been tampered with could have been contaminated.

Safety for Visitors

If you are a homeowner, it is important to prepare your property for other trick-or-treating kids who come knocking on your door. If you have any hazardous property features, like trip hazards, it’s important to either fix them or place a warning to indicate their presence and help people avoid them. Likewise, if you have pets that are not friendly to visitors, be sure to secure them as you could be liable as a pet and premises owner if they bite anyone who comes onto your property.

Going to A Halloween Party?

If you plan on attending any Halloween parties, you may wish to partake in alcohol as part of the celebration. However, before you do, be sure to plan ahead on how to get home. First and foremost, never drink and drive. Halloween weekend is one of the most dangerous weekends of the year for drunk driving accidents and fatalities, and as such police step up their enforcement. Be sure to call a cab or a rideshare program or travel with a designated driver who will get you home safely.

If you are injured over this Halloween weekend, it’s important to review your legal options as soon as possible.
